Registration

Schools

Registration information is normally sent out to schools. To ensure that timetables, draws, etc can be forwarded to schools as early as possible in Term 3, the Registration/Entry form needs to be completed and returned by the stated closing date.

Individuals

Entrants in Schools League competitions must be either registered or affilated with the NSWFA Inc. Registration is a less expensive option, but only entitles the fencer to compete in NSW Schools, Novice and Under-13 competitions. Registration can be upgraded to affiliation if the fencer later decides they want to compete in a broader range of events.

Full details of affiliation/registration (including current costs) are available on the separate Membership page of this website.

Equipment

All NSW Schools Fencing League competitions are fenced using electrical apparatus.

All competitors must wear full fencing uniform, with the exception that tracksuit pants may be worn instead of fencing breeches. For a detailed explanation of fencing uniforms, see the Equipment Requirements page of this website.

Equipment hire can be arranged by submitting a completed the Schools League Equipment Hire form (which will be available for download together with the entry form).

If a school anticipates finacial difficulties in equipping a team, they should contact the co-ordinator well in advance of the event.

Competition format

The NSW Schools Fencing League is a team fencing competition. A team consists of 3 fencers plus one (optional) reserve.

Event Categories

The NSW Schools Leage is fenced in three categories: Senior, Under 15 and Under 13.

Under 13 teams are for fencers who were under 13 (ie. 12 years of age or under) on 1st January in the current year.

Under 15 teams are for fencers who were under 15 (ie. 14 years of age or under) on 1st January in the current year.

Senior fencers are those who do not fit the "under 15" definition. Senior Boys will be fenced in two Divisions – A and B. This will allow for a more equitable competition. Placement in the A and B Divisions will be determined by the League Coordinator together with the number of Teams from each Division who will progress to the Grand Final. This information will be advised in due course.

Team Members

A school may enter more than one team. However, the members of each team must be listed on the registration form, and switching of fencers between teams will not be permitted.

The reserve may be substitued for one of the team members at any time during the match. However, the Team Captain will need to notify the Captain of the other team at least one bout in advance of the substitution (except in the case of a substitution for injury, which may be done without notice). Only one substitution per match is permitted.

Scoring

Schools League team events are fenced using the 9 bouts format. An explanation of this is available on the Competition Format page of this site, but in summary:

  • Matches consist of 9 individual 5-hit bouts.
  • The winning team is the one that has won the majority of the 9 bouts.
  • Please note that all 9 bouts are fenced, even if victory is determined before the end.

Schools League Categories

The NSW Schools Leage is fenced in three categories: Senior, Under 15 and Under 13.

Depending on the number of entries, Senior competitions may be competed in two Divisions - A and B. This will allow for a more equitable competition. The Schools Co-ordinator will determine placement in the A and B Divisions.

Trophies and Medals

The Schools’ League Shields will be awarded to:

The winner of Division A Senior Boys
The winner of Senior Girls
The winner of Mini Boys

Individual trophies will be awarded to:

Best Boy – Senior Division A and Division B
Best Girl – Senior
Best Boy – Mini

Medals will be awarded for individual performances throughout the competition.
