Olympic Gold for Chloe Esposito

Photo of Chloe EspositoNSWFA and Marconi Club member Chloe Esposito has done Australia and NSW proud taking home our first ever Olympic gold medal in the Modern Pentathlon. Pulling off an amazing final leg, by fighting back from a 45 second handicap with razor sharp shooting skills and speed, Chloe raced from 7th place to first while setting an Olympic record. Fantastic work Chloe - you are an inspiration. Good luck to brother Max who competes today and congratulations to the Esposito family especially to Chloe’s Olympian coach and dad, Daniel.

A big week for NSW Fencing

Over the last week, NSWFA successfully hosted the Australian Under 15 and Cadet Championships - a big event drawing 426 individual entries and 78 teams over five days of tough but friendly competition.

Young fencers from around Australia, New Zealand and Singapore took part.

NSW again won both major points trophies - the Frank Bartolillo Cup for Under 15s and the Janet Haswell Trophy for Cadets.

In the Under 15s, NSW fencers won 2 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze individual medals, and 3 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze in team events.

In the Cadets, we won 2 gold, 1 silver and 6 bronze individual medals with 3 gold, 2 silvers and 4 bronze medals in team events.

The full list of NSW medal winners is below.

NSWFA President Kaye Mahoney praised all fencers for their competitive spirit and the high quality of fencing. She also thanked all those who worked hard to make the competition a resounding success - the tournament officials, set-up crew, video merchandising and especially the parent volunteers who ran the temporary cafe and donated food.

On Monday 11 July the Sydney Morning Herald ran a half-page spread on the championships and you can see the photos at www.smh.com.au/photogallery

Our media director, Simon Capon, live-streamed semi-final and final bouts to the Internet and posted many pictures to NSWFA's Facebook page.

Simon also set up the video refereeing system, used for the first time for age nationals.

Calling all hands (and cooks)!

Our big event of the year - the Australian Under 15 and Cadet Championships - is coming up soon (Wed 6 July to Sun 10 July). There are well over 400 entries and we need to make a big effort to make it all go smoothly. As you know, the cafe at PCYC is closed so we are opening a temporary cafe and sausage sizzle to serve the hot soups and other food and drink we know you'll be needing on those cold days at Marrickville.

If you can help with serving food, sizzling sausages and baking cakes and cookies, please let us know. Even if you cannot help with serving we would love you to bring along and donate your specialty - chocolate brownies, cupcakes, Anzac biscuits, fruit cake, just whatever you do best.

We'll draw up a roster so by putting up your hand you don't have to commit to be there every day. If you can help please sign up using our online spreadsheet.

If you have any questions or problems with the google doc. email Scott Hull and indicate your name and contact number and :

  1. If you can help serving food and/or if you can contribute with baked goods.
  2. If you can help serving : on what days? and which shifts - 8-11 am, 11am - 2pm or 2pm - 6 pm.
  3. If you can provide baked goods : on what day? and what will you bring?

Thank you!

Vision statement from new President

It is with great pleasure that I and other executives of NSW Fencing Association begin our tenure.

We want to see the sport of fencing continue to thrive and grow in NSW and, by extension, Australia. We will be working towards maintaining a fertile environment for this to happen.

While there are many steps in our pathway, I believe that finding our own venue critical at this juncture. A dedicated venue will allow us to maintain our financial viability and expand offerings to schools, youth, veterans, NSW fencing academy, the mobility impaired and others in the community.

With this in mind our initiatives include:

  • escalating the search for a venue
  • improving communication with members
  • expanding social media presence and refreshing the website
  • fundraising
  • streamlining registration and ranking processes
  • supporting and enhancing officiating and coaching under the leadership of our head coach Antonio Signorello
  • maintaining our strong achievements at the national level

In my first week in this role, I have discovered just how much work is involved. While it might appear that the delivery of services are effortless, like good fencing, the more effortless it looks, the more likely it is that a lot of planning, preparation and teamwork went into it. As we move forward we extend our gratitude to all who volunteer and work tirelessly for the association, particularly Duncan Fairweather and Alex Andre who have been doing the lion’s share of the work.

We look forward to the continued growth of fencing in NSW.

Vale Peter Andersen

Photo of Peter AndersenIt is with deep sadness that NSWFA has to advise of the passing of Peter Andersen, an iconic and much loved member of our greater fencing community.

Peter was a valued contributor to the sport serving as Secretary and Treasurer in several national administrations. He was serving currently as the Secretary Treasurer of the Commonwealth Fencing Federation and was a past Executive Member of the Australian Fencing Federation. His outstanding contribution was honoured with the award of Life-Membership in 2005. Peter came to the sport as a fencing parent of his two sons, Sean and Paul, who represented NSW with distinction. As is often the case Peter’s involvement and sense of duty saw him remain in office long after the boys retired from active competition.

I know we speak for all the fencing community in expressing our most sincere sympathy to Bridget, Peter's wife, Sean and Paul his two champion sons, Erin his daughter in law and his beloved grandchildren Zoe and Emily. We will all remember him fondly as Peter's kind may never pass this way again.

(Bridget Andersen has advised that the Service will take place on 24 June, we will ensure that the fencing community is advised of the details.)

  3. Specifying that the Directors do not include the Executive Officer (definition of Director)
  4. Removing the requirement for Clubs to provide a copy of their financial accounts to the Association (41.1)

Mini Sabres for Under 11s

NSWFA has introduced a new weapon size requirement for sabre in the Under 11, Under 9 and Under 7 age groups.

From now on, as a safety precaution, children in these age groups must use mini-Sabres (0-3) in NSWFA Schools & State competitions.

Policy documents on the website will be updated to reflect the change.

If parents need to buy a new weapon, please see your equipment provider.

NSWFA regrets any extra cost to parents, however this decision has been taken in the interests of the safety of young fencers.

Rules changes

The AFF has provided the following information on Australian application of recent FIE rule changes:

  • FIE rule t.17 (change to sabre en guard position) - this rule will not be applied locally until the TMC reviews the FIE decision in this area after the end of December 2016.
  • FIE rule t.18.5 (card offence for reversing the line of the shoulders in foil) - to be applied from 1 January 2017.
  • FIE rule t.33.1 (reduction of injury time to 5 minutes) - this rule will not be applied locally until the TMC reviews the FIE decision in this area after April 2016.

Some other matters are of relevance:

  • The AFF’s Weapons Control Policy has been updated, noting that the key changes relating to the FIE rule change (m.27.3/m.32.4) for foil and sabre mask wires will not commence until 2017.
  • From AFC3 in 2016, the change in sabre timing (from 120ms to 170ms) as outlined in the FIE rule changes in the Material Rules Annex B will apply. States hosting AFC events will be required to notify the DT at the event as to which scoring boxes contain the computer chip allowing the new timing. AFC3 was selected as the chosen start event so that our local athletes will be accustomed to the new timing prior to commencing the FIE season in October 2016. It is also strongly recommended that States convert all of their scoring boxes to the new timing as soon as possible for the same reason(s), and in turn make similar recommendations to their affiliated clubs.
  • It is also recommended that all hosting States for 2016 have available for the semi-final and final bouts scoring apparatus which conforms to FIE Material Rules m.51.8(a), allowing display of time remaining to tenths of seconds during the last ten seconds of a bout.
  • The double-substitution rule in Team events (o.44.10(a)) is now active.

Draft NSWFA Constitution for Member comment

NSWFA is in the process of updating the existing constitution (currently known as the NSWFA Rules). This is necessary to conform with NSW law and to be consistent with the new AFF Constitution introduced last year. It is based on a template provided by NSW Sport & Recreation, adapted to suit the NSWFA governance model. The template is consistent with the Australian Sports Commission’s Governance Principles. It is intended the draft NSWFA Constitution, together with any suggested amendments, be put to Members for consideration at a special general meeting on a date to be advised but likely to be in May. In the meantime, a meeting of Club Presidents will be convened to discuss the proposed constitution and other matters.

2016 timetable updated to v. 5

The NSW Fencing timetable has been updated to version 5.

  • Marconi cup and Norse events and times corrected and amended.
  • Start times for events in October and November that were missing added.

5 March 2016

New online payment system

As from the beginning of March 2016, the online payment system used by NSWFA has been changed from SportingPulse to Register Now. The AFF uses Register Now and alignment with the AFF will deliver operational efficiencies. The cost of the online transactions (a provider service charge and card merchandise fees) will be recovered from members in addition to the price of the product offered (e.g. membership, competition entry). There is effectively a 4% increase in fees because the Register Now fee will be applied to the combined cost of the previous product fee and service fee. The increase in fees is needed to cover general administration costs.

Club and coach affiliation can now be one online. There is a new 'Pay/Register' tab on the home page Main Menu that will take you to Register Now as well as the usual link via Quick Links.

5 March 2016

Club Affiliation

The NSWFA Executive has reviewed club affiliation arrangements. NSWFA will re-introduce the concept of two categories of club affiliation.

1. Affiliated Clubs

Clubs with ten or more members who have Senior or Junior Affiliated membership status with NSWFA (competitive fencers) may register with NSWFA as an Affiliated Club. The annual membership fee for Affiliated Clubs is set by the Executive and may vary from time to time. From 2016, the annual fee for Affiliated Clubs is $208 until further notice.

2. Registered Clubs

Clubs with fewer than ten members who have Senior or Junior Affiliated membership status may register with NSWFA as a Registered Club. The annual membership for Registered Clubs is $104 until further notice.

The benefits for Affiliated and Registered Clubs are:

  • Coverage by the NSWFA insurance policy for public liability, professional indemnity and personal accident claims for the protection of club members, officials and coaches.
  • A listing on the NSWFA website of clubs’ location, contact details, training times and coaches with a link to the club’s website.

Clubs can now pay their 2016 affiliation fees online via the NSWFA payment portal.

Move to new venue stymied but new fencing Academy created

The quest for a full-time venue for NSW fencing continues.

Towards the end of last year we were close to achieving our ambition for a dedicated home for NSW fencing. We had reached an agreement with the operator of a sports complex at Alexandria for full-time use of one of their courts and the use, as needed, of two other courts for larger competitions. However, at the last minute, the owner of the property withdrew it and leased it to a global sportswear brand.

While this was a disappointing setback, we will continue actively to seek a suitable venue with full-time access for our competitions and training programs.

In the meantime, we will proceed with a key element of the plan, the establishment of an Academy to take the development of fencing to a new plane. The Academy will provide advanced training to the top echelon of fencers and seek to attract new recruits to fencing by tapping into new markets.

A key objective is to put participation and NSWFA membership/competition entry numbers on a stronger, sustainable growth curve.

The Academy will be directed by the Head Coach, Antonio Signorello, with a staff of qualified coaches.

It will be open to all registered NSW fencers. It will offer flexible day and night training sessions with individual and group lessons.

The Academy will be part of the structure of NSWFA and the Director will report to the NSWFA Executive. It is intended that the Academy will be financially self-supporting.

The creation of the Academy will allow more intensive and efficient use of our coaching resource to design and offer tailored programs for potential fencers of all ages. A key focus will be on attracting and retaining children and young people, while also encouraging more mature people to take up our sport as a way to stay fit and healthy. One new activity will be a program for wheelchair fencing.

It will be a springboard for the advancement of fencing at competitive, participative and entry levels. The potential for the Academy to develop programs for both existing and new fencers will be magnified with a full-time fencing venue.

Until a dedicated venue is found, the Academy will operate from existing premises at the University of NSW and at PCYC Marrickville where space is available and equipment is stored. However, these venues offer limited hours and it is our intention to move the Academy to a new full-time venue as soon as practically possible.

State competitions, including schools, will continue to be held at Marrickville. The Tuesday and Friday NSW Squad training sessions will also continue at Marrickville.

Further details on the Academy's objectives, programs and membership options will be posted on the website shortly.

2016 venue not changing

In the December newsletter, we reported NSWFA's plan to move to a new full-time venue at Alexandria.

We have today (22 December) been informed by the operators of our proposed new venue that the owners have decided to give the whole building to a major sports goods company. This is very disappointing.

So we will remain at Marrickville PCYC for the time being.

The search for a dedicated home for NSW Fencing will continue.

The Frank Bartolillo Cup for U15 National Team Championships

Frank BartolilloThe Australian Fencing Federation has announced a new trophy: the Frank Bartolillo Cup for annual perpetual competition between the Australian Fencing Associations, during the Australian Under-15 Championships.

Frank Bartolillo began fencing as a NSW U/13 copmetitor, and had an outstanding international career which culminated in Olympic Selection for Athens 2004.

In 1996, Frank won each of the Australian U/20, U/17 and U/15 Foil Championships and the U/20 and U/17 Sabre – 5 National titles and the only winner of all three foil titles in the one year. Continuing to break records, he became the youngest Australian Open Foil Champion at 16. Equally competent with both foil and sabre Frank amassed 28 GOLD medals at Australian age and open Championships.

A truly amazing athlete and role model.

"Fencing runs through Frank's veins and his passion continues through his rapidly developing coaching career. Fencing and Frank - inseparable."

Young Australian fencers meet IOC President Thomas Bach

In front of the Olympic flame at The Cauldron at Sydney Olympic Park, young NSW fencers gathered today (Wednesday 29 April) around the President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach.

Photo 1 - Young Australian fencers and IOC President Thomas Bach

Mr Bach was a foil team gold medal winner for Germany at the 1976 Montreal Olympics and won the world individual foil championship a year later, so it was fitting that fencers were the athletes in the media spotlight during his brief visit to Sydney. He was joined at Sydney Olympic Park by the NSW Premier, Mike Baird; the Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres; and two former Ministers for the Olympics - Michael Knight and Bruce Baird.

Fencers from NSW and interstate who represented Australia in recent Asian and World Cadet and Junior Championships were invited to today's media event. From NSW: Sean Andrews, Matthew Dall'Asen, Alexandre Douglas, Sholto Douglas, Boston Fawkes, Beatrice Hay, Violet Hull, Jesse Morris, Emily Principe, Rebekah Shiba, Matthew Tadros. NSW Head Coach, Antonio Signorello, and Assistant National Foil Coach, Hugh Cotman, accompanied our athletes.

The media event to promote fencing was conceived by Lisa Cantamessa and organised by NSWFA working with the Australian Olympic Committee and the NSW Olympic Council..

Young Aussie fencers to meet the Olympic fencer who made it to the top

Australian fencers aspiring to reach the Olympics will soon have a chance to meet a fencer who won an Olympic gold medal and went on to lead the Olympic movement.

The President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, will meet young Australian fencers when he visits Sydney on 29 April. Thomas Bach was a member of the gold medal winning German foil team at the 1976 Montreal Olympics and won the individual foil World Championships in Buenos Aires the following year.

At Sydney Olympic Park he will meet fencers who recently competed successfully in the Asian Junior (Under 20) and Cadet (Under 17) Championships in Abu Dhabi. The Australians won team bronze medals in Cadet Women's Foil, Junior Women's Epee and Junior Men's Sabre. Also joining them will be the Australian fencers who achieved a top 8 foil team placing in the World Junior Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Annual General Meeting

The 2014 annual general meeting of the NSW Fencing Association was held at Marrickville on Sunday 29 March.

The President, Duncan Fairweather, reported another good competitive year for NSWFA, with our fencers winning the Cyclone Cup for overall Open points for the fourth year, as well as the points trophy for Cadet, Junior and Veteran national championships. NSWFA is to propose to the general meeting of the AFF in May that a trophy be created for the Under 15 national championships. He noted that in 2014, NSW had ten national individual champions and 17 individual Australian No1 rankings.

In his report, the President noted a fall of 4% in overall competition entry numbers and fewer school competition entries with boys down 12% and girls down 15%.

It was agreed a working party would be established to discern the reasons for the decline in participation and propose measures that could be taken to put competition numbers back onto a growth trend and encourage schools fencing.

The Secretary, Evy Claessen-Andrews, reported a marginal decrease in overall membership from 886 in 2013 to 856 in 2014.

The Treasurer, Nigel Cotman, reported a more challenging year financially. The underlying operating profit was $8,678 within the reported profit of $38,262. The difference is due to a one-off accounting adjustment.

The position of Secretary became vacant with the resignation of Evy Claessen-Andrews because of other commitments. As no nominations were received in time, the position becomes a casual vacancy and a new Secretary will be appointed by the Executive. The President's Report for 2014 is attached..

Congratulations NSW!

NSW fencers won the overall Cyclone Cup for their performances at the 2014 Australian Open Championships in Canberra over the past 5 days. Our veterans also won the Centenary Cup.

This is the fourth year in a row that NSW has won Australian fencing's premier trophy.

In 2014, NSW has won every national championship points trophy from Cadets to Veterans, as we did last year.

At the nationals, NSW fencers won two open individual gold medals, Sarah Osvath in epee and Donghwan Kim in sabre and three team golds in men's sabre, women's sabre and women's foil.

NSW teams contested all six team finals, with the men's foil, men's epee and women's epee teams taking silver medals.

Farewell Phil Mansfield

Fencers formed a guard of honour to farewell Phil Mansfield at a Service of Thanksgiving at Woronora Crematorium on Tuesday 9 September.

Mourners filled the chapel to capacity with many standing outside during the service. Phil's son Luke spoke movingly of the warm moments he shared with his father. Friends Mike Alchin and Peter Gill spoke of Phil's dedication to his family, his friends, his community and his club - a generous man always ready to help others. Phil's life was portrayed in a video showing him as a child, a young man, a loving father and a gentleman fencer.

A memorial fund has been set up to continue Phil's work to develop regional fencing especially for young people. If you would like to donate, you can do so by EFT to the NSW account (Commonwealth Bank - NSW Fencing - a/c 062 108 10064140 - reference: Mansfield Fund). NSWFA ask that you email your bank receipt for the deposit to secretary@nswfencing.org.au at the time you make the donation.

He helped coach many young fencers. Apart from fencing, Barry was an avid aviator and was still flying until his recent illness. He was also a maker of fine pens crafted from Australian timber. When known, funeral arrangements will be posted on this website.

Rankings System Reviewed

The NSWFA Executive has reviewed and amended the ranking points system.

The main change is that Open rankings will be based on the best four results from competitions that carry ranking points and in other age categories rankings will be based on the best three results. This follows the AFF model and is intended to ensure that rankings better reflect the comparative performance of fencers.

The Rankings System can be found on the Policies page of this website with further details in the pdf links on each weapon category on the Results and Rankings page.
