Urgent Advice regarding Travelan and Colostrum

The Australian Oympic Committee (AOC) had recently advised the Australian Fencing Federation (AFF) that, following recent media reports regarding the use of colostrum by an Australian athlete, Dr Olivier Rabin, Director, Science of the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) provided the following advice on 19 March:

WADA would like to take this opportunity to emphasize that colostrum contains Insulin Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) a substance prohibited under section S.2 of the 2008 WADA Prohibited List. Even if influence of oral intake of colostrum on plasma concentration of IGF-1 is still a matter of debate within the scientific community, WADA would like to alert that abnormal increase or level of blood circulating IGF-1 would be considered as potentially revealing doping practices (e.g hGH or IGF-1 intake) by athletes.

WADA wishes to draw your utmost care in the use of colostrum by athletes.

Given WADA's cautionary advice, the AOC has recommended, in the strongest possible terms, that athletes and sports officials on the inherent risks of using colostrum as a supplement and counsels them against its use.

With respect of WADA’s advice, it is appropriate to extend the AOC recommendation to all products containing colostrum, including Travelan.  The AOC had initially recommended the use of Travelan by teams traveling to China as a traveller’s diarrhoea prevention agent. However, given this most recent advice the AOC does not now support its use by members of the Australian Olympic Team or AFF athletes.

The AOC will now review other possible preventative measures for traveller’s diarrhoea and provide the AFF with further advice in due course.

This information and recommended action is being drawn to the attention of all athletes on the AFF Weapon Squads and those competing at the upcoming Cadet & Junior World Championships and the Asian Senior Championships.

Vale Jim Wardle

The Association is saddened by the news of the recent death in Newcastle of Jim Wardle, the father of Al.

Jim was a loyal and tireless supporter of fencing in NSW, being the delegate for his clubs in Newcastle, the Team Captain for NSW and the NSW delegate to the AFF, amongst a host of other development and administrative roles.  Jim would spend a great deal of time transporting teams of fencers from Newcastle to competitions in Sydney, and this led to the career development of a number of fencers including Al.  He was truly at the forefront of fencing development in NSW and his contribution cannot be overstated.

Our condolences go to his wife Merle, and to Al.  May he rest in peace.

Foil Refereeing Discussion Forum

The NSWFA will be running a discussion forum about foil refereeing on Sunday 2 September. All interested persons are invited to attend and take part.

The objective of the forum is to get a consistent view on interpretation of what constitutes an attack in foil, so that coaches, referees and foilists can work from a common base on this issue. It's vital that foil in NSW be coached and refereed in a way which ensures our fencers will do their best at all levels of competitions – state, national and international. Currently there is confusion, disputation and inconsistency being displayed at our competitions.

The forum will be moderated by Al Wardle and be held in the Ken Brown Room at Sportshouse at Homebush Bay. The start time is 10am and the forum will last no more than 2 hours.

Sportshouse is at 6 Figtree Drive, Homebush Bay. The Ken Brown Room is accessed from the car park at the rear of the building.

If parking is not available in the street, the car park can be accessed by taking a ticket at the boom gate. This will later be validated for free exit.

The NSWFA hopes all interested parties will attend, especially those who are involved in coaching and refereeing.

It will help if attendees read Rule t.56 of the FIE Rules for Competition before the event. A copy of these Rules can be found on the British Fencing website at http://www.britishfencing.com/British_Fencing.asp?PageID=93

Updates on NSWFA State Rankings

NSWFA Rankings are now being calculated on a rolling basis.

Updated rankings will be posted to the Results page of this website after every State and National competition for that age category.

For seniors you will notice two extra columns:

  • "End XX" - the ranking at the end of the previous year
  • "Prev." - the ranking prior to the latest competition

It is now possible to watch how the results from the latest competition affect the rankings.

As the calculations are now done on a rolling basis, the results from the corrosponding competition the previous year are removed before the latest results are added.

There are still two Open State competitions in Foil and Sabre, one in Epee this year, PLUS State Championships in all weapons (worth double points). So come along and improve your ranking!

Referee rewards scheme

For the remainder of 2007, NSW Fencing will be trialing a rewards system for those referees who sacrifice their own time to come in and referee for U15, U13, U11, novice and schools competitions. The system involves earning points for time volunteered, resulting in free entry to all NSW competitions the following year once sufficient points are earned. This applies only to those who come in specifically to referee and are not competing.

A full day’s refereeing (8 hours e.g. one day at A. C. Centre) will earn 3 points. A long part day (6 hours e.g. schools competition or age competitions) will earn 2 points. A short part day (3 hours e.g. novice, U13 & 11 and part day schools) will earn 1 point. When 15 points are accumulated, the referee gains free entry to all competitions in the next year.

However, as the scheme is starting late in 2007, only 12 points will be needed to qualify for free entry to all competitions in 2008.

Participants must agree to do future refereeing courses and update their qualification frequently.

To participate, you must register by contacting Pam Zopf on pamz@nswfencing.org.au or ring 9632 6454.
