EquipmentAll NSWFA Schools competitions are fenced using electrical apparatus. All competitors must wear full fencing uniform, with the exception that tracksuit pants may be worn instead of fencing breeches. For a detailed explanation of fencing uniforms, see the Equipment Requirements page of this website. Competitors are encouraged to wear long socks in school colours. NSW Fencing has equipment available for hire at Schools competitions. If you require eqipment hire, please complete and return the Equipment Hire form in advance. It is expected there will not be spare equipment available at the venue on the day. Equipment Hire Form
Please note that the NSWFA will not be able to invoice schools for hire equipment. The options are therefore for the children to pay as they go themselves, or for the school to pre-pay by cheque. Any additions will be paid by the child at the event. If your school makes any or all of the payments, a cheque can be sent to the above address with copies of the forms. Competition formatIndividual EventsIndividual school competitions are fenced using the standard competition format, with a round of pools, followed by a Direct Elimination leading to an overall winner. Medals are awarded to the top four fencers. Please note that the Roberta Nutt shield and Gregory Blaxland Shield are individual events, but all results are collated to identify the best overall school (separate boys' and girls' shields). Team EventsTeams consist of three fencers (with an optional reserve). All preliminary rounds of the Schoolgirl/Schoolboy Fencing Championships team events are competed using the best of nine bouts format. The finals of the Under-13 Schoolgirl/Schoolboy Fencing Championships team events will also be fenced in this format. The A J Rae and Roseanne White shields are competed using the 45-hit relay format. This format is also used for the finals of the Senior and Under-15 Schoolgirl/Schoolboy Fencing Championships team events, as this is the as this is the format to be used at for the National Secondary Schools event in September.
