NSWFA Schools Competitions

NSWFA runs the Schoolgirl/Schoolboy Fencing Championships (individual and team) from April to June each year. They would be suitable as the next level of competition for a student who had fenced in the Schools Fencing League the previous year.

Other school events run by NSWFA are the invitiational A J Rae and Roseanne White Shields, the Roberta Nutt Shield and the Gregory Blaxland Shield.

Information sheets about the 2008 31th Annual Schoolgirl/Schoolboy Championships will be released later in the year.

Registration

Entrants in NSW Schools competitions must be either registered or affilated with the NSWFA Inc. Registration is a less expensive option, but only entitles the fencer to compete in NSW Schools, Novice and Under-13 competitions. Registration can be upgraded to affiliation if the fencer later decides they want to compete in a broader range of events.

Online registration/affiliation (secure credit card payment) can be done at any time. Registration/affiliation can also be organised on the morning of a competition.

Full details of affiliation/registration (including current costs) are available on the separate Membership page of this website.

Entries

NSWFA Schools competitions can be entered and paid for on the day. To ensure eligibility to fence, all competitors must enter by the published roll call time.

If you are travelling a long distance (i.e. from outside Metropolitan Sydney) and want to ensure that the Technical Director knows you are attending, you may ring on 0414 392 895 (or leave voicemail).

Entry fees are:

  • $20 per person for individual competitions
  • $45 per team for team competitions

Equipment

All NSWFA Schools competitions are fenced using electrical apparatus.

All competitors must wear full fencing uniform, with the exception that tracksuit pants may be worn instead of fencing breeches. For a detailed explanation of fencing uniforms, see the Equipment Requirements page of this website.

NSW Fencing has some equipment available for hire at Schools competitions. It is advisable, but not mandatory, to contact the equipment officer and book your requirements in advance. For more information, see the Equipment Hire page of this website.

Competition format

Individual Events

Individual school competitions are fenced using the standard competition format, with a round of pools, followed by a Direct Elimination leading to an overall winner. Medals are awarded to the top four fencers.

Please note that the Roberta Nutt shield and Gregory Blaxland Shield are individual events, but all results are collated to identify the best overall school (separate boys' and girls' shields).

Team Events

Teams consist of three fencers (with an optional reserve).

Preliminary rounds and some age-category finals of the Schoolgirl/Schoolboy Fencing Championships team events are competed using the best of nine bouts format.

The A J Rae and Roseanne White shields and some of the age-category finals are competed using the 45-hit relay format.

For full details, see the Competition Format page of this website.
