AFF Age-based and Schools Championships

The Australian Fencing Federation runs age-based and schools National Championships in the following categories:

• Under-15 (foil and epee, individual and State teams)
• Under-17 ("Cadet" - foil, epee and sabre, individual and State teams)
• Under-20 ("Junior" - foil, epee and sabre, individual and State teams)
• Schools (foil only, School teams)

Eligibility to fence in these events is based on the fencer's age as at 1 January of the current calendar year.

Registration

Every competitor in an AFF competition must be fully affilated with NSW Fencing Association. Online affiliation (secure credit card payment) is available.

Note that fencers who have previously only fenced in Schools, Under-13 or Novice competitions may need to upgrade their membership from the base-cost registration (all that is required for these events) to full affiliation in order to compete in an AFF event.

Entries

In summary:

• Fees:
  • Entry fees are $60 per weapon
  • If a competition is held in NSW, there is a surcharge of $20 per family
  • State team entries are paid for by NSW
  • School team entries are paid for by the school
• Procedures:
  • Competition entries must be made via the NSWFA Online Entry form (secure credit card payment) by the closing date published on the NSWFA calendar
  • Late entries are accepted at an additional cost, but must be made directly to the State Association hosting the event
  • State teams are selected by the NSW Selectors in accordance with the NSWFA Selection Policy
  • School teams are invited to enter by the NSW selectors

Equipment

All AFF age-based and schools championships are fenced using electrical apparatus, and require FIE standard protective equipment.

Full details of equipment requirements are listed on the AFF Equipment Requirements page of this website. Note that certain items of equipment must be submitted to Weapons Control at the start of the competition.

Note that the equipment available for hire by NSWFencing is not FIE standard, and so is not suitable for AFF tournaments. If you need equipment that is not stocked by NSW Fencing, you should make arrangements with your Club, or with one of the equipment suppliers.

Competition format

Individual

AFF age-based competitions are fenced using the standard competition format, with a round of pools, followed by a Direct Elimination leading to an overall winner. Medals are awarded to the top eight fencers (unless there are fewer than 16 competitors, in which case medals are only given to the top four fencers).

AFF team competitions are run using the standard 45-hit relay format. There is no preliminary round of pools: the teams are placed into a DE tableau based on team members' results from the individual event at the tournament.
