A Junior Fencer is anyone under the age of 20, as at 1 January of the current calendar year.
Individual and team fencing competitions for juniors are offered by the NSWFA, the Australian Fencing Federation (AFF) and the Federation Internationale d’Escrime (FIE) – see links for more information about each level of competition.
Eligibility to compete in age categories is determined by the fencer’s age on 1 January of the year of the competition. It is always permissible to fence “up” an age category (i.e. a 14 year old may fence Under-15, Under-17 and Under-20 if desired) if the fencer feels that they have sufficient experience for this. Similarly, a fencer may compete in an Open event when they feel ready for it (a NSW Novice competition may be a good introduction to fencing open events).
