Getting StartedWhere do I begin? The best way to get started in fencing is to contact (or call in to) your nearest fencing club. Most clubs run beginners' classes at various stages throughout the year. There are normally also coaches offering private tuition. In some areas, local Community or Evening colleges also offer fencing classes. In addition, a number of schools in NSW offer fencing as a sport. You might also want to come and watch a fencing competition. Do I need special equipment?Clubs and other ogranisations offering fencing classes provide protective equipment and weapons for beginners. It is normally recommended that you wear sports shoes, tracksuit pants and a long sleeve shirt/sweater, and bring along a glove (a simple cotton gardening glove is a good start). Details of standard fencing equipment (with photos) are available in the Equipment section of this website. Am I too old/young/unfit?Fencing is a great sport for young and old: NSW fencers range in age from under 10 to over 50. You do not need to be physically fit to take up the sport, as it caters
for all levels, from "social" to highly compeititive. |
