Fencing, Europe's original martial art, is an exciting, dynamic sport for men and women of all ages. Fencing combines agility and athleticism, with technical skill and lightning-fast tactical decision-making - it is not for nothing that the sport is known as "physical chess". Fencing is a workout for the mind, as well as for the body!
Fencing, one of the world's oldest sports, has its origins in training for the duel and is one of the very few sports to have been included in every modern Olympics. Modern fencing is actually three separate disciplines, each one using a different weapon: foil, epee and sabre. Electronic scoring apparatus is used and modern safety equipment made from space age materials ensures that the sport is as safe as possible.
But you don't have to be an Olympian to enjoy fencing! The clubs you will find here cater to all ages and levels - from nervous beginners and 'social' fencers to would-be world champions. Check out the getting started page for some guidelines on where to begin.
