NSW fencers hold aloft the Janet Haswell Cadet Cup they won in Perth

How The West Was Won

Our young fencers travelled to Perth last week with high hopes and a big challenge – not just achieving their best individual results but also retaining NSW Fencing’s grip on the points trophies for the Australian Under 15 and Cadet Championships.

They did it.

Both the Janet Haswell Cup for Cadets and the Frank Bartolillo Cup for Under 15s were won by NSW. We have held the Haswell Cup for five years and the Bartolillo Cup since it was first presented three years ago.

Strong team efforts were the key to winning in the west. NSW contested five of the six Cadet team finals and four of the six Under 15 finals.

Looking first at the Individual Cadet results:

In Cadet Women’s Sabre, Veronika Vasileva took gold and Alexandra Hely silver in an all-NSW final with Wenhan Shen taking bronze.

It was again a NSW show In Cadet Men’s Sabre with Sean Andrews winning gold and Christian Hely silver.

In Cadet Women’s Epee – Karen Nonis won silver and Katherine Wang bronze.

And in Cadet Women’s Foil, Violet Hull took bronze.

In Cadet Men’s Foil Shosuke Morota Chu won silver and Yves Fontaine bronze in an event strongly contested by fencers from Singapore. In fact, there were more Singapore fencers (11) in the Men’s Foil than from any Australian State (NSW had 8).

So in Cadets, the medal tally was two golds, four silvers and four bronzes.

In the Individual Under 15 events, NSW fencers won two golds, three silvers and two bronzes.

NSW fencers contested the final of the Girl’s Sabre with Veronika Vasileva winning the gold and Wenhan Shen taking silver. Natasha Jones won bronze for a strong NSW showing on the podium.

The Girl’s Epee gold was won by Katherine Wang, with Amelie Yee silver.

In Boy’s Foil, Ben Diskin took silver in the best result in this event for an Australian fencer.

Christian Hely won bronze in Boy’s Sabre.

Well done to all the NSW fencers and their coaches.

A good day for epee in the Southern Highlands.

If you missed the Southern Highlands Epee Grand Prix on 2 July, you missed a good day.  Cathy Syme from the Southern Highlands Fencing Academy reports 63 entries representing 17 clubs from as far as Newcastle, the Mountains and Canberra.  There was a good showing of 26 entries in the Open Men’s Epee (won by Jason Macqueen, ACT) and 13 entries in the Novice Mixed Epee, mainly from The Mountains Fencing Club, all of whom had a great day.  The Women’s Open Epee was won by Lisa Gemell from Macquarie Fencing Club and the Veteran Men’s Epee winner was Adam Reynolds from The Swords Club.  Sarah Osvath won the Veteran Women’s Epee with Josh Jordan taking the Junior Epee gold medal for Penrith Academy of Fencing.  Daniel Carter from Mountains won the Novice Mixed Epee.

We need help with weapons check (starting on the evening of Thursday 24 August), canteen service, daily cleaning/bin clearing and general help during the competition.

Late entry fee reduced

Following concern voiced by fencers, the NSWFA Board has reduced the late entry fee for State competitions. Instead of being twice the normal entry fee ($70), the late entry fee will be reduced to $50 – a $15 penalty over the normal entry fee of $35.

A proposal to introduce an early bird registration fee was considered but for administrative reasons it was decided to retain the late fee and reduce the cost.

It is important for event planning for the organisers and the DT to know in advance how many fencers will be attending and the doubled late fee, which has been routinely applied to fencing competitions for many years, is intended to deter late entries. Fencers are encouraged to make their entries online by midnight Thursday ahead of a Sunday competition.
