NSWFA to host new Asian Cadet Circuit

NSWFA has been selected by the Fencing Confederation of Asia to host one of the inaugural Asian Cadet Fencing Circuit events this year. The Sydney competition will be for Cadet Sabre on the weekend of 2-3 September 2017 at the NSW Fencing Centre in Alexandria. There will be both individual and team events.

The other Asian Cadet Circuit event in Australia will be for Cadet Epee, to be held in Brisbane on 22-23 July.

The Asian Cadet Circuit events will earn Australian ranking points (to be determined by the AFF Selection Commission). We are preparing an invitation to go to all Asian and Oceania fencing countries and a special Facebook event will be generated for news and instant updates

Newington boys try out Fencing Centre

Newington College has a regular booking at the Centre and last week Newington boys were bussed in to for their first training.

If other schools would like to use the Fencing Centre for training, please contact the Centre Manager, Caitlin Taylor, on 0416333117 or via email by [email protected]

Generous support for Fencing Centre

A big thank you to members and supporters who have donated items to the Fencing Centre including cafe tables, chairs, a fridge, freezer and other kitchen gear.

One generous member has offered to fund the purchase of some latest model scoring boxes – more on this sponsorship later.

We have plans for upgrading equipment, more fans and spectator seating and storage but it all takes money. Your sponsorship or donation of fencing equipment and upgrades would be most appreciated.

If you’d like to help, contact Caitlin Taylor on 0416333117 or via email at [email protected]

Or join Friends of Fencing and make a tax-deductible donation this financial year

First Comp at NSW Fencing Centre – Season Opener

On Sunday 19 March, the NSW Fencing Centre hosted its first state competition – the Open and Veteran Season Openers for all three weapons. There were a couple of teething problems but generally the Centre performed well in its first test. We are also looking at a better bag storage solution, and wish to reiterate that the downstairs area will be utilized more to keep the landing clear.

The NSW Fencing Centre at Alexandria is now in full swing for programs and squads training, and the verdict of our squaddies is that it is great and exceeds expectations!

Here are a few pics from the Season Opener:

New sporting scholarships available at Macquarie Sports

Macquarie Sports is now seeking applications for the 2017 Macquarie Sports Scholarships.

Macquarie Sports offers unique scholarships to elite, young sports men and women, who pursue both sporting and career goals.

Given the time constraints athletes experience with training, competition and study commitments, there is often little opportunity to gain corporate work experience.

Macquarie Sports scholarships provide this corporate experience, as well as networks and resources to enable a smooth transition from the sporting arena to the workplace.

Scholarship benefits

  • Training and study support grant ($1,500)
  • Twenty days paid work experience with Macquarie Group
  • The potential for paid casual engagement on Macquarie Sports’ projects/programs, as they arise
  • Networking opportunities through Macquarie Sports’ relationships with corporate, sporting and non-profit organisations.

Applications close at 5pm on Friday 31 March, 2017.

The Scholarship period commences on 1 May and concludes on 31 December, 2017.

AGM date set

NSWFA’s annual general meeting will be held at 2pm on Sunday June 18 at the NSW Fencing Centre, 190 Bourke Road, Alexandria. It will be preceded at 12 midday by a Strategic Forum to discuss NSWFA’s Strategic Plan for 2017-20.

The AGM date is later than usual to allow the Strategic Forum to discuss the new Strategic Plan in the context of the AFF’s new Strategic Plan that will be presented to the AFF annual meeting in May. Formal notice of the meeting and the Directors’ Report will be sent to all senior NSWFA members in May.
