NSWFA MARCH BULLETIN

1 March 2017

THE OFFICIAL STATE VENUE IS NOW OPEN!

All NSWFA’s equipment has now been transferred from Marrickville PCYC to the NSW Fencing Centre in Alexandria. The Centre is happy to have you! Work is still being done to install a wheelchair-accessible lift, and it should be completed soon. Plans are also underway for an official opening later in March so stay tuned.

THANK YOU TO ALL OUR VOLUNTEER MOVERS

A big thank you to the band of volunteers who moved all the gear across from Marrickville to the new venue – Antonio Signorello, Caitlin Taylor, Alex Andre, Scott Hull, Simon Capon, Hugh Cotman, Jasper Rowley, Sholto & Alexandre Douglas, Jeff Hardge, Duncan Fairweather and Nigel Cotman. Caitlin Taylor deserves a medal for wading through our storage room at Marrickville to sort out and cull mounds of outdated equipment and stored items.

AND A HUGE THANK YOU TO SIMON JIN

Coach Simon Jin generously donated a team of painters led by Edison Cai to paint the new amenities block at the NSW Fencing Centre. Thank you, Simon. The job itself was quite tricky with very high walls to tackle.

FREE COACHING CLINIC AND COMPETITIVE FENCING WORKSHOP

This year the NSW Fencing Centre will be running four Competitive Fencing Camps and four Coaching Clinics. Part of the coaching clinic courses will be scheduled to coincide with the competitive fencing camps so that coaches and fencers can have time to work together.

What are Competitive Fencing Camps?
Competitive camps are specifically aimed at fencers who are competing at state and national level. They focus on technical, mental and strategic approaches to competitive fencing. The camp is suitable for all competitive fencers (minimum recommended age of 14). Competitive Fencing Camps are free for those enrolled in a NSW Fencing Centre Program and $50 per camp for others.

What are Coaching Clinics?
These are clinics are for accredited coaches and are aimed at:

  • technical knowledge
  • providing the foundations for state level coaching
  • increasing knowledge and experience in coaching in weapons that the coach does not normally teach.

WHEN IS THE FIRST CAMP AND CLINIC?

Competitive Fencing Camp: Sunday 12 March

Coaching Clinic:  Sunday 12 March

NSW GOVERNMENT GIVES $50,000 TO NSW FENCING CENTRE

The NSW Government is supporting the new NSW Fencing Centre with a $50,000 grant under the Sport Development Grant Program. This money will go towards the capital cost of fitting out the NSW Fencing Centre.

NSWFA President, Kaye Mahoney, has written to the Minister for Sport, Hon Stuart Ayres, to thank him for the Government’s support for fencing and to invite him to attend the opening of the new Fencing Centre. The Minister has taken a keen interest in our plans to develop fencing in NSW. In 2015, he officially opened the Australian Under15-Cadet Championships hosted by NSWFA and spoke about the importance of sports like fencing in encouraging greater participation in sport and competitive ambition.
